Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum

Located one mile east of McMinnville on Highway 18 (about 45 minutes northwest of Salem), the Evergreen Museum is home to Howard Hugh’s Flying Boat (“Spruce Gooseā€¯) as well as a large collection of WWII-era aircraft such as the B-17, P-38, Bf 109 and Spitfire etc, as well as other historically significant aircraft such as the SR-71 Blackbird. Aircraft are housed in a 121,000 sq ft indoor facility. Admission is about $10.

The scenic coast is about a 1-hour drive west from Salem. Take Routes 22 and18 west to Highway 101 (the Pacific Coast Highway) along the coastline. There are numerous overlooks and photo opportunities. The towns of Lincoln City and Seaside offer restaurants and other attractions. Cannon Beach, Seaside, and Oceanside are great places to stop and sightsee.

Cascade Mountains

The Cascade Mountains are a volcanic range that stretches from northern California all the way into Canada. Numerous scenic mountain drives are possible over Mount Hood (overlooking Portland) and through Santiam Pass (an hour east of Salem on state route 22). The areas around the towns of Bend, Sisters, Madras, etc. are easily accessible from Salem through Santiam Pass by taking state route 22 west out of Salem. Count on a full-day road trip.

Cascade Locks

Cascade Locks / Bridge of the Gods in the scenic Columbia River Gorge are an easy 1/2 hour east of Portland off Interstate 84. Bridal Veil Falls is another popular destination in the Gorge.

In Portland, the Rose Quarter area is full of shops and restaurants, and is an area of concentrated nightlife. Washington Park offers views of the city and on a clear day, Mt. Hood and the Japanese Gardens.

Silver Falls State Park

Silver Falls State Park is about 45 minutes northeast of Salem. The Trail of Ten Falls / Canyon Trail passes ten waterfalls in a seven mile day hike. Shorter and longer hikes are easy to string together. There is a small fee for parking, but admission is free.
