The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) is an independent, not-for-profit organization incorporated in January 1995 to establish and administer a nationwide program for the certification of crane operators. Among the goals of NCCCO’s nationwide certification programs are: reduced risk of loss, fewer accidents, more consistent training, and expanded job opportunities for operators.

On-demand NCCCO exams

Morrow Equipment Company fully endorses the NCCCO national certification program and provides training to prepare candidates for CCO examinations. Training Center courses prepare the student for tower crane, signal person and rigger written and practical examination.

Certification requirements include: written examination, practical examination, physical requirements, and a recertification requirement. All CCO written examinations are in multiple-choice format. The Tower Crane, Signal Person and Rigger programs use a single written exam with a practical exam for certification.

Prepare & Certify

A Certification Card is issued by CCO to those meeting eligibility requirements and passing written and practical exams, demonstrating their fundamental knowledge of, and skill in, safe operation. In the first 12 years, the NCCCO administered over 320,000 written examinations to more than 60,000 operators in the U.S.

Organizations recognizing CCO certification include Federal OSHA, the National Skill Standards Board, the Association of Union Constructors, the Steel Erectors Association of America, and the Board of Directors of the American Subcontractors Association.

The NCCCO national crane operator certification program is recognized by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration as meeting OSHA’s requirements for crane operator competency and provides significant benefits for employers who adopt the CCO certification program. NCCCO programs meet federal OSHA regulations and American National Standard ASME B30.

In addition to providing a permanent test site for tower crane CCO written and practical examinations, the Morrow Training Center provides a three-day examination preparation course including classroom study and hands-on practice on an actual tower crane. Preparation courses have been proven to greatly increase candidate examination success, but are not mandatory in order to take the CCO exams.

The Candidate Handbook (Tower Crane Operator) (PDF) is available for download at the NCCCO website. The handbook includes application forms and a list of important examination study materials.
